The Hama Rikyu Gardens is a renowned metropolitan garden in Tokyo, covering an area of 25 hectares. Among the remaining daimyo gardens in the city, it is one of the largest.

Up until the Kan’ei era, it served as a falconry ground for the Tokugawa shogunate.
Later, it was the residence of Matsudaira Tsunashige, who served as the chief minister of Kofu.
As Tsunashige’s son, Tsunayoshi, later became the sixth shogun, the residence came to be used as a villa for the shogun’s family.

In the fourth year of Hoei (1707), extensive renovation work was carried out, creating a large pond in the northwest part of the garden by drawing in seawater, along with the construction of bridges , tea houses, a Kannon temple, and a main gate.

During the reign of the sixth shogun, it was renamed “Hama Goten” and was utilized as a shogun villa for the next 160 years.
It is said that it often hosted court nobles visiting Edo as imperial envoys, where they composed waka poetry while admiring the pond from tea houses, enjoyed music on boats in the pond, and observed rice planting in the garden’s paddies.

Additionally, the 11th shogun frequented Hama Goten for falconry, which had long been encouraged as a samurai tradition.

Furthermore, Hama Goten was utilized for various purposes according to the preferences of the successive shoguns, including the cultivation of various horticultural plants such as plum trees, martial arts training in the horse riding grounds, and research on industries such as pottery and weaving.

三百年の松は東京都最大の黒松であり、浜離宮恩賜庭園のシンボルの1つです。大きく張り出したダイナミックな枝ぶりは、初めて庭園を訪れた人たちの間でも評判になっています。平成30年に開催された「東京150年祭」の際には、黒松のライトアップも行われました。このほかにも、ケヤキや松といった古い大木が残っており、園内には歴史を感じさせるような見どころが豊富です。

The Three-Hundred-Year Pine, Tokyo’s largest black pine, stands as one of the symbols of the Hama Rikyu Gardens.
Its sprawling and dynamic branches have garnered acclaim among visitors to the garden. During the Tokyo 150th Anniversary Festival held in Heisei 30 (2018), the pine tree was illuminated, further enhancing its allure. Additionally, the garden boasts other ancient trees such as zelkovas and pines, providing plentiful attractions imbued with a sense of history.

江戸時代には、海水を引き入れて池をつくる潮入の池が海辺の屋敷などで流行していました。
潮入の池は、潮の満ち引きによって生じる情景の変化が楽しめるのが特徴で、実際に東京湾から海水を引いています。この庭園のような本格的な潮入の池は現代では珍しく、貴重な造園の技術を堪能できる点は浜離宮恩賜庭園の魅力です。

In the Edo period, it was fashionable to create tide-filled ponds by drawing in seawater at coastal residences and other locations. These tide-filled ponds, known as “Shioiri no Ike,” are characterized by the enjoyment of the changing scenery caused by the ebb and flow of the tide, and indeed, seawater is drawn from Tokyo Bay. Authentic Shioiri no Ike, like the one in this garden, are rare in modern times, making the Hama Rikyu Gardens particularly charming as they offer an opportunity to appreciate the precious landscaping techniques of the past.

鴨場は、鴨をおびき寄せる仕掛けを人工的に施した場所です。
鴨が安心できるように池を土手で囲い、竹笹などを植えているのが鴨場の特徴になっています。
一方鴨猟では、エサやアヒルなどのほかの水鳥を使って鴨を堀におびき寄せていました。やってきた鴨を堀のそばから網などですくい取るのが、当時の鴨猟のスタイルです。（明治以降）明治以前は、鷹狩を行っていた。園内には、鴨をすくい取るための堀も残っており、かつての鴨猟の仕組みをイメージできます。庭園の一角にある鴨塚は、捕らえた鴨を供養するために設けられました。

A duck decoy is an artificially set up area designed to attract ducks.
To ensure the ducks feel secure, the area is typically surrounded by embankments with bamboo and other vegetation planted around the pond, which is a characteristic feature of duck decoys.
On the other hand, duck hunting involved using bait such as ducks and other waterfowl to lure ducks into a pit. The ducks would then be scooped up using nets or other methods near the pit, which was the style of duck hunting at the time. In the garden, remnants of the pit used for catching ducks still remain, providing an insight into the mechanism of duck hunting from that era.
Additionally, there is a duck mound in one corner of the garden, which was established to commemorate the ducks caught.

浜離宮恩賜庭園の「御茶屋」は、庭園の景色を構成するだけでなく、園遊の際の食事や休憩、賓客をもてなす場として建てられた建物であり、歴代の将軍たちは「御茶屋」で賓客とともに景色を楽しみながら食事をしたり詩歌を詠んだり、調度品を鑑賞するなどして過ごしたほか、鷹狩りの際のお休み場所としても利用していました。

The “Ochaya” (tea house) in the Hama Rikyu Gardens not only contributes to the scenery of the garden but also serves as a building constructed for meals, rest during leisurely strolls, and entertaining guests.
Throughout history, the shoguns and their guests would enjoy meals, compose poetry, admire furnishings, and spend time together while appreciating the scenery at the Ochaya.
Additionally, it was utilized as a resting place during falconry outings.

抹茶は、日本の伝統的なお茶で、緑茶の粉末です。茶碗に熱湯を注ぎ、茶筅を使って抹茶を泡立てます。泡立てた抹茶は、一口ずつゆっくりと味わいます。

隣に添えてある和菓子は日本の伝統的なお菓子で、抹茶と一緒に楽しむことが一般的です。
和菓子には、餅や羊羹など様々な種類があり、季節や行事によって異なります。

The accompanying wagashi is a traditional Japanese sweet often enjoyed alongside matcha. Wagashi comes in various forms such as mochi (rice cake) and yokan (sweet bean jelly), and its flavors and shapes vary depending on the season and occasion.
